special note Though Albtraum is a creature of darkness, it is 99% of the time a non-violent creature unless you REALLY provoke it (typically this is done by threatening someone who has gained its affections). You're welcome to try and start a fight with it but it will just take it and is unlikely to fight back. Feel free to contact for details.
Albtraum | Der Sandmann
Albtraum is a shadowy creature. It is agendered, and reaches a height of just above six feet. In terms of social perception, Albtraum is incredibly masculine. It boasts quite a broad chest and shoulders with overall strong and muscular features. Biologically, it is actually neither sex and mentally it doesn't care. Technically it will respond to any pronoun and is unlikely to correct someone, so one might call it he or even she, but personally 'it' fits most and therefore this is the pronoun I am most likely to use, interchangeably using they/them as well.

Albtraum's voice is as much important to its appearance as its physicality is. It is very soft-spoken, but holds a deep baritone voice soothing enough to make anyone fall asleep (which does occur in humans) and often found to naturally use Sprechstimme, a vocal technique that's more speech than a song but holds a touch of song to it. It's speaking manner, especially while speaking it's native language, is known as Bühnendeutsch--it speaks slowly and with precise and sometimes over-dramatized diction such as its heavy tendency to roll its r's. While the depth of its voice is quite dark and intense, it has a rich and warm timber to it. Albtraum also, unsurprisingly, holds a very thick but understandable German accent. It can be caught humming old lullabies in idle time. When nervous or uncomfortable, Albtraum's slow and steady cadence can be interrupted with something more fumbling and nervous with ums, ahs, and pauses.

It's skin is a dirty deep peach color with various aged scars littering it -- most notably, one that tears across where a human heart would be -- and a cracked white face with black lips and dirty stained teeth. Muddy reds and tar black lay slathered around striking blue eyes and black wispy hair that acts more like shadowy ink than hair. From just about mid-breast and all the way down is a stark black dress-like attire that moves quite unlike fabric and sometimes seems to have a mind of its own which suggests this may just be its figure and not attire at all (spoiler: this is the case). Much like it's hair, this dress-like shape drags along the ground in an inky shadowy manner. From halfway down its forearm to its fingertips lays the same black, blacker than night itself, and fingertips that end in claws. Although more hands appear when interacting or expressing itself is deemed necessary as Albtraum is often expressive when it speaks and gesticulates frequently.

Now, in Deer Country, it will also often wear the cloak around it's upper body.

abilities
NOTE ABOUT ABILITIESDue to what Albtraum originally was and is now, it's abilities work ONLY on humans. It has absolutely no power or influence over any other species. If someone is half-human, its influence might be very minimal.
Manifestation & multilocationCan appear to others when they're about to sleep, are sleeping, or have just awoken. As a Sandman, Albtraum can also be in multiple places at once.
Dream Weaving When it was a full Sandman, it could craft dreams, wonderful, beautiful, creative and intricate dreams. It can only bring nightmares now and tends to influence them from the recesses of a person's mind more than create them itself. It does still collect stories and songs, though.
Nightmares & Fear Albtraum's presence naturally increases the chance of nightmares in a person (humans only). Catching it's gaze increases this chance significantly. It also appears when someone is experiencing a nightmare naturally. Also, it's gaze can inspire a sense of fear in a human. How each person feels this is different and really depends on how they deal with fear and what they fear. Common secondary emotions that one might feel include: anxiety, anger, grief.
Perception Shapeshifting When a child is locked in a particularly nasty Nightmare and it draws Albtraum to them, it manifests in a variety of ways depending on how the child perceives them. Sometimes these things are abstract or specific. So it might take the image of a known figure, such as a Parent or bully from school. It may be more abstract with bleeding eyes, morphed features such as elongated arms, long claws, sharp teeth, etc. It can take on things that the child may be afraid of that it isn't fully aware of yet, or simply a more sinister and abstract version of itself.
Shadowhopping & Manipulation When in the waking world, Albtraum can travel through shadows. "Waking world" is simply the term for not the dream world. Albtraum cannot be outside of the dreamworld when someone isn't dreaming and therefore is more common to be seen at night, but you know. People sleep at all sorts of hours. Further, Albtraum can to an extent manipulate shadows. Though not usually does it do so in any way that is offensive or defensive. Really, it's often just to keep itself in darkness or aid in its movements. Or like, make itself a chair...
Sleep Song, story, and sand are all tools it has access to put people to sleep, though now those dreams are always nightmares to some effect (scary, sad, etc). It's normal speaking voice holds a slight tune to it and has this effect to a lesser degree, a human might just feel a bit drowsy if anything at all when speaking with Albtraum although it can choose to have this effect a human more if it desires. Albtraum can also pull someone from their sleep, enter their dreams, or do really anything else in the dreamworld.
Longevity & Partial immunity Unless it's heart stops or humans stop dreaming, a Sandman lives for an extremely long time. A Sandman is also impervious to human interventions, so shooting it or attempting to harm it in any way is useless. However otherworldly creatures are another matter.

Albtraum is special in that it is already partially dead. It's heart is still beating but not in its chest. It is kept away by Death, which is what made Albtraum into what it is today. This makes it more difficult to kill, however, because they can only die through the heart unless attacked by the divine or something else of unmeasurable power.

Albtraum came with a satchel that just sort of blends into its own shadowy figure so its hard to tell where the hell it is of if they're even carrying it. So far, this is the only thing they've acquired. It came with all the basic things. Nothing followed them from their home world.

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Absolutely, they need a fucking hug.

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Go for it, its unlikely to retaliate though.

ROMANCE/FLIRTING: If you want? It's heart belongs to Death... uh literally.

SEXUAL CONTENT: Unlikely.

PSYCHIC ABILITIES: It's not impervious though it might be harder to sort through than a humans mind.

MAGIC/POWERS: Like above, not impervious.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: Uh, its a spirit. It's dead but not dead. It has no heart.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS OR TRIGGERS:
Offended: not really anything but it can be triggered into action when someone its grown attached to is in dire straights.

Albtraum itself can be offensive due to its nature. The most important and common trigger is likely child death, because it deals with children explicitly. Albtraum is also a macabre creature and a masochist. So themes of harm, of finding pleasure and bliss in sorrow and harm done upon themselves might come up. Themes of obsession and possessive behavior toward that who it loves might also come up. Feel free to check out their info post, app, or ask anything you like.

• Character Name: Albtraum
• Age: Approx 2600

Content Warnings for Character: Albtraum's history deals with current history within Germany and Germanic countries; needless to say there's plenty themes of war, terrorism, racism, violence, death and particularly child death in its history. Due to its love for Death and what it is now, child death is a frequent topic. Along with other common themes typically found in old Germanic mythology and fairytales: cannibalism, various themes of gore, and enslavement.

Character Background

• History:
So very long ago when the world was still young and its people still nomadic, a handful of tribes travelled south to new lands where they eventually settled. This area would later become known as Germania.

These tribes built homes, hunted food, crafted their own language both spoken and written, grew and prospered. Eventually, they created stories. About how the world was made, about gods and goddesses of the lands, and as their children grew ill, they created songs to appease Death into not taking their young. And in making songs and stories they created Der Sandmann. The Sandman.

Originally Albtraum was simply known as Der Sandmann, the first and only of its kind. It came to the young and eased them into a sleep through either song, story, or sand. It was a gentle creature, even with those who were stubborn. It hushed the young ones into a gentle sleep; some of these dreams were pleasant, some of them were strange, but never were they frightening. Such was the work of Mares. It grew to loath Mares and creatures like it quite early on, but violence wasn't in its nature. Often times when I child woke from these dreams, Der Sandmann would be there to gently rock them back to sleep. This became a larger role in its life when during the hardest times, the wars, the terrors that the waking world went through.

Death and Der Sandmann met very early on as humankind was young and the young fell ill often; passed away. At first, they resented her. She took away those who were dearest to it. Slowly, though, through curiosity, it got to know Death. It came to learn that she was not malicious, she simply was. She was not responsible for how people died she was responsible for helping them accept that they have and ushering them into the next place. She was responsible for the movement of time; the natural way of things.

It came to see the beauty in Death. Her honesty, her relentlessness, but how kind she was in it. Gentle, like they were. and one day Der Sandmann asked if, just before she took someone, could it sing them a lullaby. To ensure they stayed in a comfortable sleep. She accepted.

They worked well together. One weaved a pleasant dream and the other gently whisked them away. Eventually, they worked together even in times where death was unnatural. During the last few moments of a violent end, during war, and unspeakable acts. One brought a peaceful dream and the other whisked them away. And over time they fell in love, finding reason after reason to see one another. And the world aged. And the population grew. And wars came and went, times of peace came and went, but as the medical world advanced Death came to the children less and less. Death came to Der Sandmann less and less.

And time passed. And they aged. And they grew lonely. Its dreams became somber, it began to cling to the children under its keep, it mourned the days where they stopped believing in them. Slowly, even when Death did visit the young ones, she became distant. Their conversations became painful. Arguments erupted. She came less and less. It didn't know why, she wouldn't say, but the truth was that she heard their ticking clock. She knew, soon, she's have to come for them.

And that day came, the worst fight they'd had ended in violence. Where she took its heart right out from its chest and left. Der Sandmann didn't start the way that it looked now but being a creature that walked the line between alive and dead it could no longer live in the Land of Dreams; it fell into The Nameless Place. It gathered the sorrow, the fear, and pain that lived there and took these things into itself. It began to decay, and eventually it abandoned its name entirely. They became Albtraum.

• Core Relationships:
➤ "The Young Ones"
Long ago when Albtraum was known simply as Der Sandmann, it's most important relationships were the children they visited, and it frequently built a kinship with many of them. This especially became true when its domain -- the countries of Germania -- fell on hard times. It places a great deal of importance on weaving dreams to help soothe those whose lives were frought. While it cannot support children in the same way as it once did, it does still place a great deal of importance on those whom it visits each night.

➤ Death/Time
Its second, or honestly tied for first most important relationship is with Death. In Albtraum's universe Death is also Time; for a long while the night was filled with various creatures but it was Der Sandmann and Death who were most consistent and non-malicious. Over time, they fell in love. In fact, it is due to Death that Albtraum is the way they are now. She heard the ticking clock and chose, against her nature and duty, to lock Albtraum's heart away instead of put them to rest. Which resulted in them becoming more of a spirit; a manifestation of many things dark and sorrowful.

The Mare
Albtraum also has an ongoing rivalry of sorts with a particularly malicious and aggressive Mare, one that has actually managed to kill at least two of Albtraum's kind but, because Albtraum has no heart to take, cannot kill them. This relationship is important because its one of the few relationships that can invoke a violence in Albtraum.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:
Albtraum is a typically a friendly, polite, and formal creature, seen in the way it speaks and carries itself. It holds a very precise diction and tends not to use too much if any slang or even contractions in speech. It frequently addresses people as Frau or Herr, even if they're young. Whether one considers it polite or friendly it will also typically call most people "young one", dear friend, my friend, and things like this.

Albtraum is also quite wise, and it's been known to offer advice and guidance when prompted (and occasionally unprompted). This is especially true for those who are -- perhaps ironically -- most affected by its presence. Taking the fear and nightmares that come along with it when it visits the young at night, it will frequently choose to help aid them through unpacking the terrors they hold rather than violently inflict said terrors upon them.

➤ Other positive personality traits include: (Usually) Non-Violent, (Usually) Non-Confrontational, Gentle, Calm, Cultured, Curious, Devoted, Affectionate, Passionate

(2+) Negative Experiences:
Albtraum -- while a creature that feels deeply -- is incredibly repressed; this can be seen in the way that it restrains itself from the larger waves of emotion it often feels; these emotions quite clear on its face. When it speaks of love, when it speaks of grief its voice, often a low baritone and almost songlike quality, thins. There's so many subtle signs of holding back. It has confided in someone once that if it was ever to scream, it wouldn't stop until everyone was deaf. If it were ever to cry, it would drown the world. This emotional repression is very clear, incredibly clear, the longer you get to know Albtraum. It also, however, gives it a great capacity for violence once that bottle cracks.

Albtraum is lonely, incredibly lonely. This is. Well, its obvious. It shows itself in everything it does. The way it hums and sings to itself while it meanders the shadows of the waking world or the dreaming one; the way it cradles children to its breast while they panic in fright--the very fright it's causing them; the way it pines for a love that is far too complicated and how it speaks of love, and of death. It attaches itself to the sad, the broken, the fearful and the lonely as well.

➤ Other negative personality traits include: Macabre, Non-Confrontational, Morose, Stubborn, Emotional, Introverted, Obsessive, Possessive, Lovesick, Masochistic

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Found here under "Abilities"
• Blood Type: Paleblood
• Omen: Raven with eyes on its feathers
• Blessed Day: August 14 - I have 0 reason other than wanting Mariana as a Pateon so, lmao. lmk if thats not a good reason
• Patron Pthumerian: Mariana
• Blood Power Manifestation: Generally speaking, the powers that come with Paleblood complement the powers that Albtraum already has. I suppose, the difference is the reach that their powers have and slowly expanding beyond just children, humans, etc. In this, I'd be interested in furthering its dream walking and expanding into causing illusions/hallucinations, I'm also interested in expanding its empathy.

Lore: Locations -- work in progress

THE PLACE WITH NO NAME
The Place With No Name is a part of the Dreamworld where all the deepest pieces of the heart and the subconscious within a dreamer lives; it is where the mares, nachtkrapp, and other such creatures of dark dreams reside. This, of course, includes Albtraum.

This place is not only made of fears, but of things that a dreamer feels a longing for, ashamed of, wrathful toward, grief over, lusting for, and other such more "hidden" and "dark" emotions. The Place With No Name or sometimes called The Nameless Place changes depending on the Zeitgeist of the places it hides under the veil of (Germanic countries) and depending on how far you travel as it correlates to places within the waking world. Therefore, it also changes based on who is sleeping nearby in correlation within the Waking World. This place, because a Sandman lives within it, also holds pieces of Albtraum. For example, there is typically the faint sound of a song and a heartbeat riding the air.

Someone who has fallen deep into their subconscious can drop into this place. Normally these are people who aren't dreaming but are in a deep unconscious state, sometimes a coma but not always something so severe. It can also be someone who lucid dreams and simply walked too far or got lost. This is less likely, though, as those within the main Dreamworld will often stop these dreamers from crossing into The Nameless Place.

GENERAL ATMOSPHERE
The general appearance of The Place With No Name is dreary and obscured. The sky is an overcast of swirling and shadowy grey. There is a thick fog that rolls along the ground and occasionally manifests in all sorts of ways such as forming a person, weighing down a person, or any other sort of action that lays deep in someone's subconscious. Say if someone fears sinking, the fog may work to pull them down and imitate this feeling. The shadows move and often have eyes. Waiting. Watching.

There is a long road that runs through it. How it looks and how one travels through the Nameless Place all depends on who and what is around. It may be a dirt road, it might be steaming hot pavement, it might be cracked and fragmented. It could be a straight line or a road with twists and turns. Someone can break away from the road but it's inadvisable. While there is plenty to be distressed over from the road itself, its safer than anywhere else within The Nameless Land.

COMING SOON:
The Lake of Sorrows

The Black Forest
This is where the Mares, Nachtkrapp live. It's dangerous, with its ashen trees that often attack intruders and its pitch black atmosphere.

The Mirror of Reflection
A massive mirror far into The Land With No Name. It takes some work getting to and the path to it is different for each person. Eventually one will find a more slender road shooting off from the main one. The more your heart burns for this object the more difficult it is to get to. Once someone reaches the mirror they will find it's framed in beautiful ornamental silver and the reflection is a swirling shadowy gray. If they step forward and stand right before the mirror, those shadows will shift and part to show them their heart's greatest desire. There is no real formula to understanding who can and cannot obtain what they see. The mirror just chooses as it wants.

If this is a person, then whoever is observing the mirror will be able to watch them. If they are lucky they'll be able to get their attention and speak with them. If they are even luckier, the mirror will turn into a portal where either party can join the other. This is the same for objects. Either the viewer will just be able to see the object, or they'll be able to reach out and enter the area where the object is or bring the object back into The Nameless Place with them.

The Endless Fall
At the furthest reaches of The Nameless Place is a fall. The sound of water is deafening although there seems to be none. The closer you get, the more it shifts into screams. While often you will not see from whom those screams come, they are neverending. Anyone who steps off this cliff is doomed to an eternity of endless falling; suspended in freefall forever.

Albtraum | Der Sandmann
So very long ago when the world was still young and its people still nomadic, a handful of tribes travelled south to new lands where they eventually settled. This area would later become known as Germania. These tribes built homes, hunted food, crafted their own language both spoken and written, grew and prospered. Eventually, they created stories. About how the world was made, about gods and goddesses of the lands. And as their children grew ill, they created songs. To appease Death into not taking their young. And in making songs and stories they created Der Sandmann. The Sandman.

Albtraum is patched up from Germanic Folklore and also, frankly, a song. It is one of very few Sandman and the first Sandman to come into existence. It is unique in that it's missing it's heart but its heart is still beating which makes it dead but not dead at the same time and shoves it into a realm between being a Sandman and being a manifestation/spirit.

Due to this, Albtraum has lost its ability to create good dreams, songs, and stories. Now it is a thing of darkness, nightmares, and fear. This is not to be understood as similar to a Mare or a Nachtkrapp, however. Albtraum is not malicious, and its relationship to nightmares and fear is symbiotic in nature. Where they are, it is. Where it is, they are. Whereas a Mare and a Nachtkrapp are malicious, aggressive, and have even killed children in their sleep.

Albtraum has been known to stay with the children who wake in fear of their nightmares, occasionally holding them as they scream, cry, or panic, before disappearing.

appearance
A shadowy creature, agendered, and reaching a height of just above six feet. In terms of social perception, Albtraum is incredibly masculine. A broad chest and shoulders with overall strong and muscular features and a throaty deep voice. Biologically, it is actually neither sex and mentally it doesn't care. Technically it will respond to any pronoun and is unlikely to correct someone, so one might call it he or they or even she, but personally 'it' fits it most and therefore this is the pronoun I am most likely to use.

More info hereAlbtraum's voice is as much important to its appearance as its physicality is. It is very soft-spoken, but holds a deep baritone voice soothing enough to make anyone fall asleep (which does occur in humans) and often found to naturally use Sprechstimme, a vocal technique that's more speech than song but holds a touch of song to it. It's speaking manner, especially while speaking it's native language, is known as Bühnendeutsch--it's slow and with precise and sometimes over-dramatized diction such as its heavy tendency to roll its r's. While the depth of its voice is quite dark and intense, it has a rich and warm timber to it. Albtraum also, unsurprisingly, holds a very thick but understandable German accent. It can be caught humming old lullabies in idle time.

Although hands appear when interacting or expressing itself is deemed necessary as Albtraum is often expressive when it speaks and gesticulates frequently.

Character Q&A
Have a Question? Leave it in a comment!

➺ What, in the most concise terms, is Albtraum?
A Sandman, and the first Sandman at that. A Sandman without a heart.

➺ Is there more than one Sandman?
Absolutely. They aren't a very common race, though. At any given time there is maybe around three or four since they are capable of being in more than one place at a time. This ability though, along with everything about them, becomes less with age.

➺ How is a Sandman born?
Out of need. If a Sandman is aging and cannot be as many places as it could before or perform its duties as well as it could and needs to take more time to do them, another is born. If one dies, another is born. As the population grows, another is born.

➺ Does a Sandman have a name?
No, not usually. They are simply Sandman. Sometimes they are given names by the children and adopt those names.

➺ Why does Albtraum have a name now and what does it mean?
Because its not fully a Sandman anymore. While technically Sandman is still its race, it is more a manifestation, spirit, or entity now. One that has effects similar to a Sandman. Albtraum simply means Nightmare in German.

➺ Why is Albtraum not fully a Sandman anymore?
Because it's dead, sort of. While a dead Sandman disappears, it still exists because its heart hasn't stopped beating its just not IN its person. So this puts it in a weird place between being a Sandman and being a Manifestation/Spirit.

➺ How does being Heartless affect a Sandman?
Well, typically it kills them but its heart is still beating. It just isn't beating within its own chest. Without a heart, The Sandman is unable to make pleasant dreams, stories, or songs.

➺ How did it lose it's heart and why did it happen?
Death took it because she loves Sandman but is no longer prominent among the young, with its heart she can always have Albtraum with her. This is the running theory at least. It's probably a little more complicated.

➺ Where is Albtraum's heart?
It's unknown. Some think Death has hidden it away and others think she carries it on her person.

➺ Does Albtraum love Death in return?
Absolutely, It fell completely head over heels for Death many years ago. It loves her still to this day and likely will until its heart stops beating.

➺ What are those scars?
Guess.

➺ Kind of sounds like Albtraum is a masochist...
That's because Albtraum is a masochist.

➺ What did Albtraum look like before when it was a Sandman?
Like this.

➺ Why does Albtraum sometimes cry blood?
Its Death's way of communicating with Albtraum. When it cries blood, its her whispering to it about a young life it just took away.

➺ Why do they not see one another anymore?
It's not particularly clear why Death avoids Albtraum or Albtraum avoids death or who avoids who, but it IS known that Death's presence around young children is becoming rarer and rarer as Humankind advances. Whether that has anything to do with it isn't clear, and Albtraum doesn't talk about it.

➺ What is the difference between Albtraum and a Mare?
Mares are malicious and aggressive. They sit on the dreamer and force them into nightmares. When one wakes from them, they force the dreamer into a state between the waking world and the dreaming world which results in temporary paralysis. The anxiety and fear that comes from this effect is feasted on until they are full and they disappear. A Mare can be incredibly violent, and it's not unheard of a Mare to physically harm a dreamer in search of stronger fear.

Albtraum occasionally visits those it has grown attached to and they often experience it's visit as sleep paralysis, but Albtraum does not cause it. It's more of a result of the adult mind not particularly being open to the concept of Albtraum being real which typically throws the dreamer into a panic, attempting to wake before the body is ready.

➺ Where is Albtraum most prominant?
While many cultures have a creature like Sandman, The Sandman as its known in this tale and many others hail from Germanic countries. It's prominent in places like Germany, Poland, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

➺ Can or does it travel to other parts of the world?
Not really, no. For the sake of roleplay, I often go with the idea that whomever it speaks with is dreaming at the moment whether they're aware of that or not. In places like Nexus, where worlds collide or creatures can manifest outside of their normal parameters this matters less.

➺ Can Albtraum manifest anywhere or anytime?
No, it exists in the dreamworld and only comes into the waking world when someone nearby is about to sleep, sleeping, or just waking up.

➺ Does a Sandman age and can they die?
As mentioned above, yes they can die and yes they age. They age incredibly slowly, but they do age and they can die. For an example of how slowly they age, Albtraum was born shortly after Germanic tribes started singing lullabies and remembering dreams. It has only now started looking up there in age.

A Sandman can also die by the hands of the divine or otherworldly. Humans cannot kill them. Death by an outside force is more common than old age given how slow they age. Mostly, this is by the hands of a particularly aggressive Mare.

➺ Let's talk sex and gender about Sandman?
Sure, they're all sexless. Some prefer being known by certain pronouns or present themselves as certain genders, but none of them have any reproductive organs. Albtraum itself doesn't care and will go by any pronoun one wants to give it. Due to its appearance, it is often called He but in my meta I will use It.

➺ What about romance?
A Sandman can love, and Albtraum is one who loves deeply. Much like humans, their relationship style varies. Some are monogamous, some poly, some have gender or sex preferences, some don't. Albtraum is monogamous and panromantic.

➺ Do all Sandman act the same?
No, they all have the same function but their personality and gained interests vary widely.

➺ What sort of interests does Albtraum have outside of stories, songs, and dreams?
Albtraum is a poet and loves poetry, it also loves visual art and theatre, it loves Opera and Orchestra music as well. It has an affinity for philosophy and philosophical conversations.

➺ What is the role of sand for a Sandman?
It depends on the Sandman. A Sandman has mystical sand that can help ease a child to sleep but it also has stories and songs in its arsenal. Each Sandman has a different preference. Albtraum prefers song first, story second, and Sand last. A Sandman is also composed of this sand and leaves it behind when they pass, or sometimes if they spend a considerable amount of time with a child traces of sand can be found in their room.

➺ How does Albtraum create nightmares?
By existing. They exist around it and it exists around them. Both happen, usually, simultaneously. The relationship between nightmares and Albtraum is symbiotic in nature.

➺ Can Albtraum force nightmares onto others?
Certainly. It does this sometimes on children that are particularly poor behaved, but generally not. Overall its a non-confrontational creature. It does whisper and lull children to sleep, though. Old habits. Unfortunately this will indeed cause them to have nightmares. It also hushes children who wake from nightmares and while its presense doesn't exactly help, it listens to them while they scream, or cry, or panic.
